AI-AIS RIVER CANYON INFORMATION
The hiking trail is only open from 1 May to 31 August every year due to
extreme heat during summer. The hiking trail covers approximately 90km
but if the various short-cuts (shown as green lines on the map - p 73)
are taken the distance is shortened to about 80km. Individual persons
are not allowed to hike through the canyon and groups must consist of
at least 3 persons to be allowed to hike. Children must be over the age
12 and accompanied by at least one adult. Although day temperature
during the cooler winter months are generally pleasant, down on the
canyon floor the temperatures may be as high as 42˚C during midday.
Hikers must be fit and hiking is done at own risk. A medical certificate
(not older than 40 days) for each member of the group must be provided.
Should a hiker get injured or other problems may arise, the emergency
escape routes at Palm Springs and south of the war grave can be used to
evacuate persons or to terminate the trail. In severe cases air evacuation
will have to be organised.
